Close your refrigerator door - if you pull out the mustard for a sandwich close the door right away- not 10 minutes later when you are done making the sandwich
Kill your AC at night - if you live in the Midwest you know that summer nights can be pleasantly cool. At the end of a summer day it can be cooler outside than inside due to trapped heat in your abode. Turn off your AC at night and open the windows - enjoy the crickets and lower electricity bill
Compost - start a compost pile. Think of all the organic waste that goes into your garbage disposal. Put a bowl in your sink and fill it with organic waste. Dump it in your garden or behind the garage. Feed your green plants and not the sewage waste plant.
Turn off the lights! - your parents have been telling you since you were a kid. Seriously, you know you are still guilty. No excuses.
Avoid using plastic in the kitchen - think of all the items in our kitchens that are made from plastic. Producing plastic is hell on the earth and many believe our bodies. If you can, use ceramic containers. They have a very long lifespan. Use paper bags. Drink tap water. There is more plastic in the kitchen than anywhere in your house - lets change this.
Buy rechargable batteries - total cost of ownership is compelling in comparison
Bring your own shopping bags - it costs more to recycle a plastic bag than to produce it
Buy an iPhone - limit your gadget acquisitions. manufacturing electronics is hell on the environment. iPhones can serve every technology need under the sun, thus consolidating the need for 16 gadgets into 1.
Support outdoorsmen - seriously? believe it or not groups like the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, and National Wild Turkey Federation pump billions (with a B) of conservation dollars into our forests, wetlands, rivers, lakes and streams
Use your blinds wisely - passive solar energy can be used to control the temperature in a room without touching your thermostat. by opening and closing the blinds/curtains of sun facing windows you can have a profound impact
Use your own coffee mug - ask to have it filled and keep refilling it
Conserve napkins - don’t take 40 napkins use one and throw the rest away
Drink tapwater - in case you have not figured it out yet someone is making a fortune selling you their tapwater
Kill your thermostat - in the midwest spring is a great time of year to save on utility bills and conserve energy. Turn off your HVAC all together - a sweatshirt or lack of should do the trick
Use more glue - if something breaks don’t be lazy, just fix it instead of buying new. Gorilla glue is incredible btw…more to come - Pete Klassen
