Because of the complex mathematical calculations it must perform, the rating engine at Grange Insurance, as at most insurance companies, ran traditionally in a mainframe environment. With the emergence of high-performance, multicore hardware, the company rewrote the engine in the Microsoft® Visual C#® programming language and, in 2006, began running it in a server environment based on the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.
